Sandie Witbeck, Local Ranch & Rodeo Painter
Sandie Witbeck
Local Ranch & Rodeo Painter
Taos, New Mexico is high-desert ranch home to western artist, Sandie Witbeck, and her constant companion, Dollie, a blue heeler. Together, the two frequent rodeos and visit ranches across New Mexico, Texas and Colorado. Sandie photographs thousands of very high speed images from ground level, sometimes in mud, a few inches from flying hooves; shooting upwards at on-coming wild horses & bulls and the cowboys who ride ‘em.

She paints this action in oil on canvas in her casita studio and also offers high quality Giclee prints. When home on the WW Ranch at 1400 feet below the Taos Ski Valley, Sandie farms chef-favored heirloom organic pumpkins, winter squashes & gourds.Horse love began at age twelve with nights spent in the stall of her new born foal, Sassy. The two were inseparable for 26 years, through a fine arts degree from University of California at Davis, world travel as a flight attendant and photojournalism for newspapers & magazines. Well known mentors are John Farnsworth, Gary Cook, Ray Vinella & Doug West.

A MOMENT IN THE LIFE OF A
RODEO SHOOTER

"I was flipped over three times while shooting from behind an arena gate where the pickup cowboys were pushing the bronc, who smashed into the gate that hit me on the head and set me in motion. I landed on my feet, camera in one hand and blood on the other."

Two teenaged girls, jaws on ground, rescued Sandie and helped her to the rodeo ambulance where the medic said, "Yep, there’s a hole in your head, get in . . . oh, and can you let go of that camera?" Not wanting to leave her dog behind at the rodeo grounds, Sandie told the medic, "Dollie’s in my truck..."

He said, "Well, we’ll just stop and give her some water on the way to the hospital."

By the way, seven scalp staples later, Sandie won’t ever shoot from behind a loosely chained gate again, but you will see the same connection with rodeo action and excitement that graces her paintings.
